Social engineering is a way for criminals to gain access to your computer. The purpose of social engineering is usually to secretly install spyware or other malicious software or to trick you into handing over your passwords or other sensitive financial or personal information.
Online criminals can use sophisticated technology to try to gain access to your computer, or they can use something simpler and more insidious: social engineering.
Some online criminals find it easier to exploit human nature than to exploit holes in your software.
It uses a website that looks benign but convinces visitors to download and execute a piece of software that has malicious intent. Usually this software forwards personal information that is used in identity theft operations. Examples include:
1. Screen savers
2. Video player upgrades
3. Free games
4. Free virus removal programs
Examples of socially engineered malware loaded a virus on my PC when I downloaded what I thought was a free screen saver. This ia attack evolving social engineering are designed to "exploit" users rather than actual security flaws, by the good technique from offering the victims a promise of cash incentives to scaring them into doing an hidden action which will backfire and infect the computer of the user with malicious code.
While there is no such patch for the problem that actually sit between the chair and the computer monitor, IE9 is the next best thing, a security barrier against socially-engineered malware as close to impassible as possible. Only 1% of social engineering malware will bypass IE9, with the browser it can warning the customer for the rest of 99% of the so called socially engineered malware. Compared to Opera 10 for example, which lets all attack passed.
Base from the statement of NSS labs, statistics says information security research and testing organization, which tested browser browser resilience against malware in the past version of the browsers. IE8 Superior to Chrome 4, Firefox 3.5, Opera 10 and Safari 4.
IE9 has quite an advantage over IE8 as well, which block 90% of socially-engineered malware, and Microsoft reveals that responsible is the evolution of security features in Internet Explorer 9. By its SmartScreen technology, Internet Explorer 8 and Internet Explorer 9 Beta helps protect the end users by detecting and blocking websites that distribute socially-engineered malware and phishing attacks.
